Thermo What?

So I am just about to finish reading the book of the month and just in time too! (next month is MARCH, my favorite month)

I’ve really enjoyed the authors approach to being Vegan. She even gives you her definition of what a Veganist is:

Ve*gan*ist (vee guhn ist) n.

  1. Someone who looks closely at all of the implications of their food choices and chooses to lean into a plant-based diet,
  2. Progress, not perfection.

While reading her book I came across something extremely interesting and I had to share. She introduced me to a new word.

The Thermo Effect

“Thermo what?” I know, I said the same thing. The Thermo Effect comes from the term Thermogenic and means tending to produce heat. To make a long story short, a few doctors did some research and found that people who ate a whole foods and plant based diet lost a significant amount of weight. So as they looked into why, they found that vegan diets are high in complex carbs which causes the body to burn some of those calories as heat during digestion in stead of storing it as fat. And what’s amazing is that same thermic effect can be seen in diet pills and pharmaceutical drugs. So instead of having to supplement your self with those Thermogenic Pills… Just change your diet… Sounds easy and good to me!

a little FYI:

Kathy Freeston explains in The Veganist how a “whole foods plant based diet causes you to burn calories 16 percent faster after meals for about three hours. This revving up of your metabolism causes gradual and healthy weightloss”

Well this week I tested this theory out and started the PCRM 21 day kickstart a bit early. I am thrilled to say I have already seen amazing results. And I feel like I am not even trying! I have lost about 3 lbs this week and its definitely more than water weight, I feel lighter and less bloated and just all around GOOD.

Here is the list she provided of Thermogenic foods high in protein and fiber:

  • Tofu, Seitan, Tempeh
  • Nuts, Seeds
  • Beans, Legumes
  • Lettuce (go for the darker ones)
  • Spinach
  • Mushrooms
  • Celery
  • Asparagus
  • Kales, Cabbages, Broccoli, Cauliflower
  • Apples
  • Berries
  • Peaches
  • Apricots
  • Pears

** She states that “these foods vary in their thermic effects, but all of them will help your body burn fat and lose weight” **

Hope you’re as excited about this new information as I am… Now off to make some amazing new recipes based on these amazing new facts!
